TAKING CARE OF YOUR TEETH

Oral Health

We only get one real set of teeth, so we’ve got to take good care of them.

My son is losing his baby teeth now, and I’m teaching him the importance of good oral hygiene to preserve his permanent teeth.

There have been many advancements in dentistry with dentures, crowns, implants, etc. but even so, if we lose our teeth, they are gone for good. How do we take better care of them naturally?

Causes of Poor Oral Health

Before I cover what you can and should be doing, it’s important to understand what can lead to poor oral health:

  • Not brushing and flossing – This should be obvious. You should brush and floss twice a day (morning and evening) at least. Dental problems go up the less you brush and floss.
  • Grinding your teeth – Issues with your jaw, TMJ, and posture can lead to more problems. These should be addressed to help prevent grinding.
  • Highly acidic foods – If you’re eating a lot of acidic foods, it can wear down the enamel that is designed to protect your teeth. This leads to a higher risk of cavities and infection.
  • Metal – Implants, and fillings made out of metal can be problematic outside of just your teeth.

Why Metal in the Mouth is Problematic

Metal creates a disruption of the electricity in your body, which creates problems for the nervous system and the heart.

Metal fillings can also lead to high levels of mercury in the body.

If you have metal fillings, don’t rush out to get them all removed at once. This can actually release a lot of toxins in the body if done improperly.

You should find a naturally certified dentist in your area, who can help you figure out the best options and schedule to replace the metal in your mouth.

If you do need work or fillings, avoid all metal. Instead, go for bridges or a porcelain filling.

Warning Signs of Bad Oral Health & Eating Habits

If your mouth has any of these symptoms, it’s a reflection of what’s going on inside of you holistically:

  • Infections
  • Flare-ups
  • An exposed nerve
  • An abscessed tooth
  • Pain in the gums

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, the first thing you should change is what you’re eating.

You need to lower the carbohydrates and processed foods, and put in more fruits and vegetables. This will reduce the inflammation and infections that poor oral health can cause.

If you notice any problems in the mouth, look at your diet first.

5 Natural Ways to Improve Your Oral Health

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a process that involves pulling coconut oil from one side of your mouth to the other. It’s especially good if you have an infection or irritation inside of your mouth.

Here is how you do it:

  • 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil. I would use unrefined cold pressed
  • Pull the coconut oil in and out of your teeth
  • Swishing the oil around the sides of your mouth for 1-2 minutes
  •  Be sure to spit it into the garbage, not the sink, shower, or toilet, once you’re done, because it can clog drains

Oil pulling is a great way to help kill off some of the 700 different types of bacteria that end up in your mouth.

Gargle Hydrogen Peroxide

Avoid mouthwashes like Crest or Listerine–they are full of chemicals.

Instead, use hydrogen peroxide, which can be found in almost any store

Here’s how to use it:

  • Mix with water (optional)
  • Spray into your mouth
  • Gargle it around for 30-60 seconds.
  • Spit it out.

You can do that two to three times a week. Combining this with oil pulling is a great way to remove bacteria from your mouth, and freshen up your teeth and gums.

Colloidal Silver

If you have a significant infection, use colloidal silver in order to treat it. We have a silver serum, which is a patented technology where the silver has permanently become a part of the water molecule.

The silver serum is a great antimicrobial for your mouth.

Use a Water Flosser

A water flosser is a device that cleans in between your teeth by pushing a high-pressure stream of water through them.

I recommend still flossing and brushing your teeth, but I would add a water flosser into your daily routine. It’s a very good way to sweep away bacteria, food particles, and anything stuck in between the teeth that flossing might not have picked up.

Find a Holistic Dentist

When looking for a dentist, you want to find one that wants to preserve your teeth as long as possible. Metal fillings put toxins in your mouth, and will eventually crack your teeth.

If you have metal fillings, I would recommend finding a holistic dentist for your annual or month-to-month care, and ask them what the best course of action is for your teeth.

Summary

Practice the 5 oral health tips I listed above, in combination with brushing and flossing your teeth.

  • Coconut oil pulling
  • Hydrogen peroxide mouthwash
  • Colloidal Silver
  • Water Flossing
  • Holistic Dentistry
