Non-toxic Toiletry Shopping Guide: 4 Ingredients To Stay Away From
Share
Today I’m going to give you a simple list of non-toxic toiletries—toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, and lotion—and the 4 ingredients in them that you have to watch out for.
Think about how many products you’re putting on your skin every single day—there are a lot!
Your skin is the number one detoxifier in your body, which means that if you don’t treat it right, it can affect how often you get sick!
No Aluminum – Deodorant
The problem with aluminum is that it can create genomic instability. This allows the cells to mutate a lot more, which means it can disrupt hormones as well.
Aluminum is one of the big ones that is included in a lot of deodorants.
It’s used to block sweat glands, which is a good concept, but also doesn’t let your body detoxify in any way.
If you’re shopping for deodorant, get one that is free of any aluminum.
No SLS – Toothpaste
With toothpaste, watch out for both SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) and SLES (sodium lauryl ether sulfate).
SLS is worse for you, but SLES can’t be broken down by the liver, so I don’t recommend toothpaste that contains either of these.
Some toothpastes can contain 1,4 dioxane, which is associated with SLS, a hormone disruptor.
You’re not going to see 1,4 dioxane on the ingredient label, but the toothpaste will be cross-contaminated with it if it contains SLS.
SLS is in most products that have suds, such as shampoos and cleaning products, but it’s primarily found in toothpaste.
A good brand of toothpaste, David’s, says right on the back that it is SLS-free.
If you’re looking for a natural way to brighten your teeth, you can use baking soda or hydrogen peroxide a couple of times a week.
No Fragrances – Shampoo
Acure is a good shampoo brand because it is formaldehyde-free, cruelty-free, mineral-free, and petrolatum-free.
If a brand puts in the work to make a healthy product, they’re going to let you know on the back.
The one thing you want to avoid when shopping for shampoos is fragrance. This also applies to lotions.
It’s not that you can’t have something that makes them smell good, but the word “fragrance” is vague as to what’s in them, because it’s so unregulated.
With those, you can get a lot of phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors and known allergens that create allergies in your body.
No Parabens – Lotion
Parabens prevent molding, so they extend shelf life, but they’re not so good for your life. Try to look for lotions that don’t contain any parabens, because they’ll put “paraben-free” on the package if they’ve put in the work.
