How To Find The Best Fruit At Walmart (And For A Good Price!)
Share
In the Livingood household, we eat a lot of fruit, specifically lower-sugar fruits so that we don’t spike our insulin levels.
Today I’m going to show you what fruit I’d be looking for when shopping at Walmart.
They have some of the best prices on fresh produce depending on if it’s in-season or not.
So which fruits should you focus on eating? If you do have kids at home, how can you find the best fruits for them at a great price at Walmart?
Low-Glycemic Fruit
I like to get berries because berries are really light on insulin and sugar in terms of spiking it inside of your system.
That matters because if you’re eating a lot of bananas, mangoes, peaches, or Honeycrisp apples, you’re raising your blood sugar.
I love those fruits, don’t get me wrong, but if you’re trying to get into fat-burning mode, those are going to work against you.
Fruits of that nature are also very high in fructose, which impacts your liver.
Half of America is dealing with fatty liver disease right now, and fructose gets stored as fat when it hits the liver.
This is going to raise triglyceride levels in your blood, which is worse if you have a cholesterol problem because it can create more heart disease.
I stay away from those fruits because we already overdo sugar.
So when I’m picking a fruit, I’m going for the low-glycemic ones, which means berries and Granny Smith apples.
Organic Fruit
The reason I pick organic options when it comes to these types of produce is because they’re often sprayed with chemicals, herbicides and pesticides. That all ends up in you.
Also, some fruits, especially papayas and bananas, are often genetically modified.
Why does that matter?
If you genetically modify a food and then you eat it, imagine what that’s doing to your DNA.
Organic Granny Smith apples are low-glycemic and really good to dip in some almond, peanut, or cashew butter. I like to eat them as a snack on the go.
Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries are good as long as you get them organic to avoid those pesticides and chemicals.
You should also make sure they’re not genetically modified.
Look out for the USDA organic sticker that should be on the front of the berries’ container. That shows that the berries were protected.
Berries To Buy
Blueberries are a fantastic source of antioxidants, which are really good for helping cleanse your liver from any fat building up in it.
Raspberries contain a lot of nutrients, and they’re an excellent source of vitamin C.
You’ve got to be careful with raspberries, though, because some of them could already be going bad in the store.
Always wash them when you get them home. You can actually dip all of these berries in apple cider vinegar and water and then store them.
That knocks out a lot of bacteria and kills it.
If you’re going to get raspberries, you may want to try that because they go bad fast and you don’t want to waste money.
Blackberries are probably one of the best fruits from an insulin- and glucose-spiking perspective.
You do have to be careful about blackberries molding and going bad. Again, you want to get them organic.
You can also get these berries in the freezer section for fantastic prices.
Getting them local would be a good choice as well. They’re just not available all year round.
You can also add some fruits to your water like lemons and limes, which are excellent sources of nutrients like vitamin C.
That’s also a good way to get some extra electrolytes.
Those are the main things that I’d focus on buying while getting low prices and getting the nutrients you and your family need.
