The Healthiest (and Cheapest!) Eggs You Can Find
Share
If you’ve ever shuddered at the price tag of eggs, or wondered which kind you should even buy, I have the solution.
Today, I’m going to show you how to save a dollar or two on healthy eggs by shopping at Walmart.
I’m going to show you what to look for if you want healthy eggs with a price point that’s hard to beat.
Obviously the prices will go up and down, so I’ll hold back from putting the specific number on it.
However, compared to your local health food store, the eggs at Walmart are 1-2 dollars cheaper depending on the season.
What To Look For
If I were shopping for eggs, what would I be looking for? First, I would stay away from the conventional styrofoam container eggs.
There are a couple of labels you’ll see on egg cartons like free-range and organic, which aren’t bad.
But pasture-raised is gonna be your ideal when it comes to anything chicken-related.
That means the chickens can roam free, and eat what they’re designed to eat, which are actually bugs.
Even if a container says the chickens were fed an all-vegetarian diet, that doesn’t really make the eggs healthy, because in nature a chicken would eat bugs.
If they don’t have pasture-raised eggs, I still like free-range because the chickens do get access to the outdoors, instead of conventionally-raised or cage-free chickens.
Now, free-range chickens are not completely locked up, but they are usually still in a rough environment, which I know because I worked on a chicken farm when I was growing up.
Modified Animals
Now, chickens are often given things like antibiotics, steroids, and hormones, which you want to watch out for when buying eggs.
They’re given steroids or hormones to try to get them to grow faster.
Chickens are also often given antibiotics to keep them from getting sick because if they get sick, the farmer loses money.
You’ll see it right on packages if the chicken had no added hormones or no antibiotics.
Even if the package says “fed a vegetarian diet,” their feed still could’ve included a chemical like arsenic that’s going to make the animal grow faster.
You don’t want arsenic to end up in you.
This is why you want to look for the USDA-certified organic symbol on the packaging in addition to a pasture-raised label.
If you are shopping for cage-free or free-range eggs, they’re pretty similar, so just make your decision based on price.
Now, eggs have a lot of B vitamins, which are an excellent source of energy.
Eggs are also a good clean source of protein that your body can easily process.
If you’re in a pinch in the morning, you can get some protein in by making eggs instead of munching on carbohydrates.
Getting your eggs at Walmart is a great way to save a lot of money on your grocery bill so that you can still eat healthy without breaking the bank.
