How Appealing Is Apeel Really?

Food waste is a big problem. Stores, restaurants, and consumers all throw away a large amount of produce.

Whether it’s because it wasn’t used fast enough or couldn’t be sold in time, around 40% of food is wasted in the U.S.

Apeel is a seemingly ingenious coating that is used on fruits and vegetables like avocados.

It keeps these foods from oxidizing much longer than an uncoated fruit or vegetable would, which helps keep them from going to waste.

However, when something looks too good to be true, it usually is.

Apeel is a produce coating that was backed by Bill Gates. Apeel is made out of monoglycerides and diglycerides, which are found naturally in plants.

While the mono- and diglycerides aren’t the biggest problem, not knowing what plant source these glycerides came from is a cause for concern.

Apeel doesn’t list what plant source their glycerides come from, although they do list a bunch of what isn’t used as their source.

That Apeel doesn’t want to trust the public with full transparency is part of what stands out about it.

The other side of what makes Apeel questionable is what exactly happens to the fruits and vegetables that last longer than normal.

Because Apeel is quite new to the market, it’s hard to say what happens to the nutritional value of a food product that’s coated in Apeel.

What Are Monoglycerides?

In nature, monoglycerides and diglycerides are fatty acids that help plants retain moisture, especially in their roots.

When used in food production, however, they are used as emulsifiers to improve texture in baked goods, processed foods, and frozen and packaged foods.

Mono- and diglycerides can contribute to a higher level of inflammation in your body, especially if you already have high cholesterol.

This is because while they are classified as an emulsifier, they are used in your body as a lipid, but they don’t behave like nice fluid lipids do.

Instead, they can clog up the entrance to your cells and make it hard for waste to leave and nutrients to enter your body.

How Can You Tell If Your Food Has Apeel On It?

Apeel isn’t in every store yet. Produce that does have Apeel on it often has that written on the produce label.

You can also check with your local grocery store as to whether they’re selling Apeel produce.

The downside if you’re trying to avoid Apeel is that you can’t wash off the Apeel coating because of the way it adheres to the skin of the produce.

The best way to avoid this product is to find produce that’s uncoated.

If you can’t avoid it, then taking the skin off of the produce (if you’re able to) would be the next best solution.
