What Is the Krebs Cycle?
Mitochondria, which live inside your cells, are shaped similarly to kidneys or kidney beans.
Inside the mitochondria is a folded membrane that has a larger surface area to make more energy.
Outside of the mitochondria, glycolysis, or the breakdown of glucose, is taking place.
The pyruvate molecules that are produced by glycolysis then become part of the Krebs cycle, which happens within the mitochondria.
In the Krebs cycle, chemical reactions break down the pyruvate. This fuels the continuing process of making energy.
With this, the Krebs cycle takes another molecule called NAD and converts it to NADH.
When NAD becomes NADH, it has an electron added in the form of hydrogen, which is what the H represents.
From there, the NADH is used to make ATP, which is the form of energy that your body prefers.
When the bond holding the electron on the NADH is broken, explosive energy is released.
This is used to create a bunch of ATP, which then goes off to give the rest of your cells energy, fueling your whole body.
